Footsteps
walking safari camp is located in the northern reaches of the
Okavango Delta in northern Botswana, near the pokey out bit of
Namibia. The camp is built in the Shinde concession. This
concession has the best of both worlds, it has access to the
permanent waterways of the Okavango Delta as well as some
superb countryside for walking and game viewing on foot. The
camp has to be accessed by light aircraft and the trip from
the airstrip to camp can get really interesting during the
annual flooding.
Footsteps is a
walking safari camp - first and foremost - the camp does have
a vehicle for game viewing at night and for approaching
dangerous game which is normally located by the walkers and
guides while on foot.
This
is a safari experience for those who like to walk and want to
work for their game viewing. Being on foot and following the
tracks and sign of a pride of lions, a leopard or a herd of
elephants can be really exciting as well as superbly rewarding
if you can find the animals you have been following.
Secondly
this walking safari experience is more intense and slower
paced than a vehicle safari - you get time to enjoy an
environment free of vehicle noise while the flora and small
fauna help point you in the direction of bigger game.
The
Footsteps walking safari experience is best suited to three or
perhaps four days depending on what other experiences we have
planned during your visit to Africa. Three days is best suited
if we have planned for you to go on to one of the cooler
safari camps for more wildlife viewing. Four days is better
suited if we have planned for you to go on to safari
experiences other than wildlife viewing.
Footsteps
walking safari camp is a pure tented camp with no permanent
structures. Camp consists of the main mess tent surrounded by
three large insect proofed tents each with a bucket shower and
short drop toilet. The camp caters for a maximum group size of
six walkers.
The
insect proofed tents are large enough to stand upright in and
are equipped with real beds, mattresses, duvets and linen. The
camp relie's on paraffin lights at night and the hot water is
boiled on a fire and then brought to your shower and hoisted
above your head by a pulley system.
